Q. What are your dates?

A: August 17-21, 2016, which would be a Wednesday through Sunday convention.  Pushing earlier has proven to be good for a lot of Worldcon members, particularly those with school-age children or jobs in education.  Rest assured that we’re getting as good a deal on the hotel rooms as we would have on Labor Day Weekend.

Q: Is Kansas City, MO the best place to hold a Worldcon?

A: The best place to hold a Worldcon is one where the people putting it on care greatly about you having the best time possible while there. So why Kansas City, MO you ask? For starters, location! Kansas city being so centrally located makes it easy to get to by plane, train or automobile. There are large populations of fandom within an easy drive so come on by and enjoy what Kansas City has to offer. Dallas, Denver, Chicago, and Indianapolis are just a few cities within driving distance to KC. We’ve made it even more attractive by being able to offer you rooms in our hotel for $124 dollars a night and keeping all our space within a 2 block radius. We’re also bringing together the best group of people who are focused on providing you with a amazing experience that you will never forget. Just ask someone who attended the 1976 Worldcon here, they are still talking about it!

Q: What about your Facilities?

A: We have a signed contract on Bartle Hall and the Kansas City Convention Center. One of the advantages for the Worldcon is that we will have close to 80% of the downtown hotel rooms and 60% of the Convention Hall space. We will be the only game in town. A very big deal in a major media market.

Q: How about the weather? Will I get sucked up by a tornado and taken to Oz?

A: Sorry to disappoint, but Oz apparently only accepts Kansans. We will be in Missouri. Additionally, tornadoes typically occur in spring and to a lesser extent in fall. We will be in full summer in Kansas City. The temperature should be somewhat cooler than Reno and San Antonio, but not as cool as Chicago or London (the choice of these four cities will represent the most recent Worldcon host cities at the time of the vote in 2014).  The humidity should be comparable to Chicago or San Antonio, while the odds of a rainy day are comparable to London (though the monthly precipitation is higher in Kansas City, so expect the rain to be heavier if we get it).  If it’s not raining, the odds are that it will be sunny, though – likelier than at any of the other cities we’ve listed but Reno.  If you’ve got a sense of what Southern and Midwestern August weather feels like, it should be somewhere in between.

Q: Okay, seriously. What will the weather numbers be like?

A: The average temperature in August is 76.1F/24.5C.  The average of the lows is 65.7F/18.7C and the average high is 86.4F/30.2C.  The average relative humidity is 73.5%.

Q: How come I can’t get a discount on my Worldcon Membership by Friending the Bid?

A: This is complicated, and possibly best explained by Dave McCarty in PR1 from Chicon 7. In a nutshell, what we are trying to do by bidding for the Worldcon is to be granted, by the Worldcon and WSFS, the right to to be the Steward of the Worldcon in 2016. We are not, until that right has been granted, allowed to do anything officially for the Worldcon or WSFS. So promising discounts, which is effectively Worldcon’s money, seems somewhat disingenuous. However, we have gleefully appropriated Chicon 7′s model, and will be taking donations from Goats (and even opposing donations from Rabbits), while holding some of the money from Aldermen and Magistrates in escrow.  See the Support the Bid page for more information.

Q: What’s with all the stuff about Boss Tom and President Truman?

A: In a nutshell, Tom Pendergast ran the political machine behind the Democratic party in Kansas City in the ’20s and ’30s, and launched the political career of Harry Truman.  It’s an interesting piece of our history, and it lets us dress up and throw Jazz Age parties.
